The Netherlands National Bird (endangered)

Junior farm minister Jean Rummenie is planning to set aside tens of millions of euros to save the black tailed godwit (limosa limosa), dubbed the Dutch national bird, whose number has been plummeting due to intensive farming methods, RTL news has reported.

Rummenie, a minister on behalf of the pro-countryside BBB ( a citizen farmer political party), is currently working on a package of measures to shore up the godwit population, the broadcaster said. There are now just 25,000 breeding pairs in the country, compared with 120,000 in 1970.

In August, the European Commission said the Netherlands is in breach of the European Bird Directive by failing to protect the godwit, putting it in danger of extinction.

The Netherlands is of crucial importance for the survival of the bird as 80% of the black-tailed godwits in northwestern Europe come here to breed. The bird was even elected “national bird” of the Netherlands in 2015.

The finishing touches...

plus finishing the heating and installing the power points (recycled from our house)

We were planning to touch up another apartment - but Janny said someone is looking for accommodation for a Polish worker that they have employed...so we'll wait on that one. We have enough other stuff to do :-)

Pancake Thursday

For the Day Activity workers

Just another group activity that we try now and then - this time a few cooking, a few setting the table, the fire going and an invitaion to Janny's Mum....(who remembered that my Mum had a liking for sugar, lemon juice and cream on pancakes). There were also bacon and cheese varieties and plain with "appelstroop" - I think molasses...nothing too adventurous.

No kids this weekend, so I have a chance to tidy up the apartment that we have been working in - it always amazes me just how many tools are needed to do everything - but also thankful that I have assembled a good collection over the years.

We also had news that one of our boys is leaving...it always seems a bit sad, but they simply grow up and grow out of it...Richard has been bringing his study material to the farm and is going to end up helping his father in the roofing industry. I'll need to look it up, but I think he has been with us for about 8 years (could easily be more)...it's good to feel that we have helped along the way.

Words

Every now and then I come across some funny words - I wrote some down in Google Keep during the week - but now can't find them! So many years of notes and reminders - maybe I should try to clean it up a bit :-)

One that I can remember is more of a saying...

When we watch English language TV, Janny likes to have Dutch subtitles - which I usually read as well. There was one the other night about "keeping distance from someone who is making unwanted advances" - "hou de boot op afstand" was the subtitle, literally, "hold the boat off" which I thought was fairly cultural in this part of the world.

Snow! (short-lived)

The Day Activity atelier early morning

Makes the daily walks a bit different...

Ben is home from Istanbul - nice to have him "home", even if it is Amsterdam
